Hospice

Hospice is available to help people facing a life-threatening illness maintain their dignity, choice and quality of life while giving respite and comfort to their caregivers before and after the death of their loved ones.

Become a Volunteer for Hospice

Hospice support is divided into two key areas:

Palliative Services

Provide support to individuals living with a life threatening illness and extends to the families, loved ones and caregivers of the individual.  Services include:

  • Visiting Companionship – trained volunteers provide light personal care and emotional, social and spiritual support.
    • Caregiver Respite – trained volunteers provide necessary respite for family members and caregivers.
    • Caregiver Support – trained volunteers provide emotional, social and spiritual help for family and friends.
    • Vigil Support – trained volunteers assist with end-of-life support for clients and family members.
    • Case Management – staff liaise with other health care providers to address client needs.

Bereavement Support

Provides support for individuals grieving the death of a loved one. Services include:

  • • One To One Support – trained volunteers provide individual support following the death of a loved one.
  • • Group Support – Eight 2-hour sessions facilitated by trained volunteers.
  • • Special Occasion Sessions – One-time group sessions focus on special dates or occasions such as Christmas, holidays, mothers and fathers day.
  • • Memory Boxes – volunteers can assist clients and family members with making memory boxes.
  • • Memorial Service –A celebration service held during the holiday season
  • • Memory Tree – through the holiday season, the community is invited to place a dove on a community tree to honour a loved one

Lending Library

Hospice maintains a library of books and videos on a wide range of subjects such as; caregiving, ethics, spirituality, grief and bereavement, funerals, and titles for children and youth.

These resources are available to borrow as needed free of charge.  Visit our two library locations at 174 Oliver Rd in Campbellford and 1005 Elgin St., Cobourg to browse the titles or contact a hospice staff member.  

Public Presentations and Community Awareness:

Hospice has a team of volunteers who are ready to visit throughout the community to share the history, stories and programs of the organization.  Individualized presentations can also be developed to meet the needs of specific groups or organizations.  Please contact the Regional Hospice Program Coordinator to discuss having a hospice presentation come to you
